Reliable API Integration: Timeouts, Retries, Idempotency and Circuit Breakers

The network is not reliable

A successful development request says little about production. Timeouts, partial outages, late responses, duplicates and contract changes must be designed for.

Explicit timeouts

Every external request needs an appropriate timeout. Excessive values consume connections while aggressive values without retry create false failures.

Retry only the right failures

Retrying non-idempotent operations can duplicate payments or orders. Use bounded attempts, exponential backoff and jitter.

  • Separate 4xx and 5xx
  • Use idempotency keys
  • Exponential backoff
  • Dead-letter handling
  • Correlation IDs

Adapters and internal contracts

Business rules should not depend directly on provider DTOs. An independent adapter reduces the cost of replacing payment, SMS or healthcare providers.

Observability and reconciliation

Structured logs, metrics, traces and periodic reconciliation jobs are essential for finding differences between systems before they become silent operational errors.
